Around the world, over 15 million people have taken Zyprexa®, a second generation antipsychotic drug that has been approved by the FDA to treat schizophrenia and the manic stage of bipolar disorder. Although there is no definitive report to detail the benefits of Zyprexa®, a shocking number of health risks have recently been associated with the drug. There is evidence to suggest that Eli Lilly & Company knew of these risks long before they were forced by the FDA to include them in their labeling of Zyprexa®. To this day, Eli Lilly has taken no measures to prohibit "off-label" (non-FDA-approved) prescriptions of Zyprexa®, including many issued to children.
Among the possible risks of using Zyprexa® are such side effects as diabetes, pancreatitis, substantial weight gain, tardive dyskinesia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Children are as susceptible as adults to these adverse side effects, which is made all the more tragic by the fact that Zyprexa® has never been approved by the FDA specifically for use in children.
If you or someone you love has suffered an injury as a result of taking this dangerous drug, it is important that you seek the advice of an experienced Zyprexa® lawyer. Eli-Lilly & Co., manufacturer of the anti-psychosis drug Zyprexa®, recently agreed to settle legal claims that warning labels provided consumers with inadequate information about side effects. The legal battle resulted in a settlement of nearly $700 million over claims that before September 2003, Zyprexa® warning labels insufficiently cautioned users of the risk of developing hyperglycemia, a condition associated with diabetes in which blood sugar levels are elevated.
Lawsuits were filed against Eli-Lilly on behalf of Zyprexa® users shortly after a 2002 study published by Duke University proved that the drug increased the risk of patients developing diabetes and pancreatitis. By the end of 2004, more than 125 individual lawsuits had been filed by Zyprexa® users against Eli-Lilly. Although sales of Zyprexa® have dropped significantly over the past year, the drug remains available and is still prescribed to children and adults alike for uses not approved by the FDA.
Nearly two years after a 2002 study published by Duke University that linked Zyprexa® with diabetes, a class action lawsuit was filed against Eli Lilly on behalf of Zyprexa® users from throughout the United States. Since then, an increasing number of individual lawsuits have been filed by people who have taken Zyprexa® and suffered such side effects as diabetes and pancreatitis.
